About apostille and legalization of documents
To travel abroad, it is enough to have a foreign passport. But, if you are traveling to another country not for tourism purposes, then most likely you will need other documents: Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Diploma, Power of Attorney, certificates, etc. But in order to use them abroad, you need to go through the legalization procedure or put an apostille to confirm authenticity.
Each country has its own requirements. Until 2024, Ukrainians, in order to use documents issued in Ukraine in Canada, went through consular legalization.
Countries that have signed The Hague Convention accept documents with an apostille. This is such a simplified form of legalization. A stamp is placed on the document, which confirms the authenticity of the signatures and seals of the persons inside the document. After this procedure, certificates, Diplomas, Powers of Attorney can be used abroad, they have legal force.
Apostille for Canada in 2024
As we noted above, in order to use documents in Canada, previously Ukrainians had to go through the consular legalization procedure.
On January 11, 2024, the Convention of 1961 abolishing legalization came into force in Canada. Since this Convention is already in force in Ukraine, now Ukrainians only need to put an apostille on documents. This greatly simplifies the preparation of documents for study, work, and permanent residence.
An apostille for Canada can be used for:
- Birth, Marriage, Death, Divorce Certificates;
- educational documents (Diplomas, Supplements, School Certificates);
- documents executed by a notary (for example, a Power of Attorney);
- certificates of no criminal records, etc.;
- submission to other government agencies.
It is important to know that the apostille stamp is placed only in Ukraine, so you need to take care of this before your trip. Also decide on a complete list of documents that you will need in Canada in order to prepare them for use in the country. This way you will save time and money.
